Natural History Museum unveils immersive new experience with David Attenborough

Opening 19 June 2025, Our Story with David Attenborough invites visitors into a 360° immersive journey through the epic history of humankind, narrated by the beloved broadcaster and created in collaboration with Open Planet Studios.

If you’ve ever wished Sir David Attenborough could personally walk you through the story of humanity, from the formation of the Earth to the pressing challenges of the present, the Natural History Museum has just made that dream a reality.

Launching on 19 June 2025, Our Story with David Attenborough is a first-of-its-kind immersive experience for the Museum. Blending state-of-the-art projection technology with Attenborough’s inimitable storytelling, the new 50-minute show promises a poignant, powerful reflection on who we are, where we came from, and where we might go next.

Narrated by David himself, the experience is set in the Museum’s Jerwood Gallery, which will be transformed into a full 360° cinematic space. Audiences will be surrounded by sweeping projections and evocative soundscapes as they’re taken from the ancient seabeds of Earth’s earliest days to the tangled rainforests of today and even glimpses of the future we might yet build.

“Humanity is the most influential species on Earth,” David says. “We depend entirely on this magnificent planet, yet its future is in our hands. My hope is that visitors of all ages will experience our extraordinary journey at the Natural History Museum and come away feeling inspired, informed. Most of all, empowered about their integral role in our world.”

Produced in collaboration with Open Planet Studios, the experience is designed to captivate and provoke in equal measure. As the story unfolds, audiences will witness humankind’s rise, our impact on species like whales and gorillas, and the environmental consequences of progress. But this isn’t a tale of doom and despair – it’s a call to action rooted in optimism and the belief that we still have time to make a difference.

Jonnie Hughes, Co-Founder and Director of Open Planet Studios describes the project as a natural fit for both the studio and its long-time collaborator. “We have had the pleasure of working with Sir David on a host of projects over the years. He is always eager to investigate new ways of telling stories. Hence, it was no surprise to us that he jumped at the chance to work on this 360° immersive experience.”

This latest addition joins a growing lineup of dynamic new programming at the Museum, including the recently launched Fixing Our Broken Planet gallery and the upcoming headline exhibition Space: Could Life Exist Beyond Earth?, opening on 16 May. For Dr Doug Gurr, Director of the Natural History Museum, this new chapter is part of a wider vision.

“Our mission has always been to create advocates for the planet,” Doug explains. “Our Story with David Attenborough will certainly be one of our most special experiences, as the Gallery is transformed into an immersive escape where the story of our species will come to life around us.”

Beyond the visuals, Our Story is also a landmark in accessibility and engagement. Tickets go on general sale from 22 May, priced from £20, with sessions running until January 2026. Museum members benefit from priority booking from 20 May and a 50% discount, not to mention the usual perks, including exclusive access to the members’ Anning Rooms and discounts across the Museum.

While the subject matter may stretch back billions of years, the message of the experience couldn’t be more timely. This is storytelling designed not just to inform but to inspire action, to empower the next generation of planetary advocates in an age of ecological uncertainty.

Whether you’re a die-hard Attenborough fan, a curious mind seeking cosmic context, or simply in the mood to be wowed by cutting-edge design and storytelling, Our Story with David Attenborough promises an unforgettable journey through time, with one of the most trusted voices on Earth as your guide.
